Descenders is a downhill mountain biking video game which puts players in different environments. Each level in the game is procedurally generated. In each level, the player races a downward course on a relatively dirt trail. During the trials, the player gains opportunities to perform tricks with their bicycle.
Each level also presents a set of random objectives to complete, such as performing a trick a certain number of times, or finishing a race within a certain time.

Descenders is a rather clever take on extreme downhill freeriding that eschews the carefully handcrafted tracks found in most other games of its ilk in favour of satisfyingly scrappy, procedurally-generated affairs that allow you a surprising amount of freedom to approach their challenges as you see fit.
The game is centered around the randomization of each run down the mountain. Not only are individual courses randomized by level of steepness, curves and stunts, but the routes available as you progress through a world are similarly unique to each run.
Complete an entire run in a world without bailing out too many times, and face a boss level — a steep and challenging course ending in a gargantuan mega-jump. In the Highlands, grassy fields are interspersed with quarter pipes and wooden ramps, and even the occasional castle tower jumping challenge. The Forest, the second world, adds jumps through firewatch towers and twisted bridges over rocky pits. Tour de France Four worlds are available in total — the aforementioned Highlands and Forest, and the latter-game Canyon and Peaks.
These checkpoints are completely optional, though, and breaking from the path is always a possibility. Reputation, or Rep, is the primary method for Descenders to mark your achievements. Rep pulls double duty in Descenders, acting both as a marker of skill higher Rep places you in higher skill ranks and also as a method of gaining new cosmetic items, some of which only drop at higher levels.
Career Mode. Each course provides a variety of challenges, from tight corners to steep drops. If you crash your bike you lose a life, and once all those lives are gone, you go right back to the beginning of the game. The road maps of each area play out like the famous game show Blockbusters. You can choose a path straight to the Boss Jump, or take a detour to gain sponsors and visit the Medic Camps to gain extra lives. From then on, it only gets harder. How you chose to play Descenders is entirely up to you. Reputation is earned by completing courses without crashing, as well as hitting random objectives given to you whilst the new course is loaded. Thankfully, Descenders gives you a bit of a break from the Career. Even some of the courses within the areas throw out unique playgrounds, such as the construction site found in the Highlands.
